It has been some time since i last updated my blog, so todays posts will be quite large. Since my lost post i have refined my chosen research area and acquired a clearer image of what i want to achieve when my project is complete.
My project will still revolve around combing real time footage with mixed media, but i have decided to focus on looking at how the visual effects industry creates action sequences for both small and large feature films. So my Research question and aim
‘What are the difficulties when compositing mixed media in order to produce a realistic scene?’
2 - The Research Question
The project will attempt to uncover the problems VFX artists face when challenged to mix several varying types of media together to create a realistic effects to immerse a viewer in a realistic world. The research will explore and address the following questions, in order to learn the many problems a VFX artist can come up against.
A. To examine relevant literature and research studies and report how VFX artists
successfully use matchmoving to incorporate live footage with CGI renders into a
realistic shot.
B. To explain how VFX artists use rotoscoping, on live plates to produce a realistic
and accurate finish in a final shot.
C. To research the techniques used to light 3D renders appropriately and what
difficulties this can bring to the VFX artist in the process.
D. To discover the problems that the VFX artist face’s when trying to incorporate
mixed media of varying scales accurately into a successful shot.
The project will aim to arrive at a set of conclusions by summarising and discussing the principle findings, noting limitations and caveats of the VFX industry. To determine whether the research question has been answered, and to subsequently offer recommendations regarding the best approach, in order to yield successfully greater results when working with visual effect’s. Ultimately the creation of the project is to conceptualize, film and composite a short film, showcasing the techniques I have learned and my ability to work with VFX.
