Today I have been working on my first shot that involves my muzzle flashs and my ejecting shell casings. My main soldier sneaks into the bunkers perimeter and after spotting an unaware enemy lets of a volley of shots, all hitting home on the target. I used a muzzle flash I designed in Photoshop and composited this in AfterEffects over my footage every time my actor pulls the trigger, at the same time i inserted the footage of my ejecting shell casing. It took me a while but I feel I got the timing and ejection flight path working correctly. Next I worked on creating realistic looking flash backs on my attacking soldier. To do this I created a mask layer and drew my mask around the ares that my flash back would reflect on. Next I edited the masks hue/saturation levels to give a lightened effect, next I timed the opacity of my mask layer so the opacity peeked right where my muzzle flash occurred.
This is the results of my editing and tweaking;
